College notes

Cabrillo College had six players score in double digits and played improved defense on Saturday night in Yuba, said Seahawks men’s basketball coach Tony Marcopulos after his team improved its record to 6-10 with the 89-76 victory.

Marcopulos was impressed with the play of Arnold Walton, who scored a season-high 25 points in the game. Walton, a 6-foot-4 freshman forward out of Foothill High School in Bakersfield, has become a force in the post during the last several games Marcopulos added.

Joe Williams (14), Myree Bowden (14), Tyler Williams (11), Anthony Robinson (13) and Cliff Tomlin (12) were Cabrillo’s other top scorers.

Marcopulos said the team, which has been notoriously slow-starting this season, played better in the first half at Yuba and took a 39-37 lead into the intermission.

"Getting balanced scoring is a step in the right direction," Marcopulos said. "The guys in the low post are starting to come around, and as a team, we’re starting to look forward to conference."

The Seahawks’ next game, against Santa Rosa Junior College, is scheduled for Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Santa Rosa. The team will return to Aptos on Jan. 5 to play Butte College at 7 p.m.

Cabrillo opens Coast Conference play at home on Jan. 9 against Hartnell, also at 7 p.m.
