Local digest: Seahawks hoopsters headed to playoffs again

Sentinel Staff report

The Cabrillo College men’s basketball team realized it was on the playoff bubble after finishing with an overall record of 9-22 (2-10 in the Coast Conference, South Division).

But the squad received good news on Monday, as the Seahawks were included in the California Community College men’s basketball, Northern Regional field of 32 teams. The playoff appearance is the second in a row for the Seahawks, a team that also advanced to the tournament in 2001 under coach Tony Marcopulos.

Cabrillo, the 30th seed, will face No. 3 American River College (26-6) in Sacramento on Saturday. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The Seahawks will look to sophomore Myree Bowden (21.0 points per game) and forward Anthony Robinson (10.3 ppg, 7.8 rebound per game) to lead the way against the Beavers.

Cabrillo assistant coach, Derek Olson said the ’Hawks relish the opportunity to compete in the playoffs.

"It’s good to make the tournament for the second year running because it shows we are continuing to build our program," Olson said. "We don’t have anything to lose, and the guys will fight hard and leave it all on the floor on Saturday. Coach Marcopulos will get us prepared and we’ll see what happens."

Several players on the current Cabrillo squad played in last year’s playoff game, a 80-53 loss against No. 4 Columbia College.

The winner of Saturday’s contest will advance to the second round, to be played next Wednesday against the winner of Saturday’s battle between the College of the Redwoods and Monterey Peninsula College.

The American River College campus is located at 4700 College Oak Drive in Sacramento. For directions call the school at (916) 484-8011.

  • Cabrillo’s Bowden was named to the All-Coast Conference, South Division first team on Monday for his outstanding play this season.

Bowden, who signed a letter of intent with the University of the Pacific in Stockton earlier this winter, finished second in the Coast-South in scoring with 225 points (22.5 points per game).

San Jose City College’s Jamaal Hill was the only Coast-South player to average more points than Bowden through the entire season, with 22.0 ppg. Bowden scored 610 points in 29 games overall for Cabrillo, good for 21.0 ppg. The sophomore also averaged 3.3 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game.

  • The time is rapidly approaching for the 2002 Santa Cruz County boys select soccer team try-outs.

Try-outs will be held for eight different club teams in four age divisions.

The youngest select team will be made up of under-11 boys, coached by German Plaza (427-0408). The first try-out for this new team, dubbed the SCC Breakers, is scheduled for March 9 at Aptos Junior High, from 9-11 a.m.

There are two U-12 teams that need players. The SCC Lionhearts coached by Paul Gooch (475-0461) has its first try-out on March 10 at UC Santa Cruz, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Also competing in the U-12 division is the SCC Chivitas, coached by Julio Hernandez (761-2928). The Chivitas first try-out will be held at E.A. Hall School in Watsonville on March 10, from 1-2:30 p.m.

Three U-13 teams are seeking players. The SCC Ronin, coached by Michael Runeare (427-1649, first try-out on March 9 at SLV Junior High, 1-3 p.m.); SCC Inter led by coach Abel Abrego (763-9006, first try-out scheduled for E.A. Finally players may try-out for the two U-14 select clubs.

The U-14 teams (SSC Bobcats coached by Bob Poser, 818-7074, and the SCC Phantom coached by Wes Bare, 462-2922) will hold try-outs together. The first is scheduled for UCSC on March 10, from 3-5 p.m.

The SCC select clubs seek players who are motivated to play soccer at the highest level in the California Youth Soccer Association-North. The eight teams will participate in the Abronzino Playing League, representing Santa Cruz County. Players should attend as many try-out dates as possible. Each player should bring a ball, water and the appropriate gear to the try-out. Contact Paul Holocher for information at 688-1505.
